In what\u2019s become an annual tradition here at Power Your Practice, we reflected upon the past year in healthcare and compiled a list of 52 industry developments for the benefit our readers.<\/p>\n<p>So, feel free to take some time away from fiddling with the new gadget you received over the holidays and enjoy the first installment of our three-part series.<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->Surprise: Practice Design Affects Productivity<\/strong><br \/>\nAs you try to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of your staff, it\u2019s important to know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/practice-management\/4-tips-designing-more-productive-practice\/\">small tweaks<\/a> like shifting the lights at your office can get an extra hour of productivity per week out of each full-time office employee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Providers Just Aren\u2019t Into Their EHRs<\/strong><br \/>\nThe numbers don\u2019t lie \u2013 80% of EHR users said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/electronic-health-records\/2013-the-dawn-of-a-new-ehr\/\">their current system did not meet their needs<\/a>, for reasons such as poor design and lack of interoperability. Providing up-to-date personal health information (PHI), proper training and securing all paperwork containing PHI are just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/practice-management\/14-best-practices-hipaa-compliant-staff\/\">some of the ways to avoid a hefty penalty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doctors Get Social Media<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to QuantiaMD, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/practice-marketing\/physicians-social-media-strategy\/\">67% of doctors use social media professionally<\/a>. Yes, this means adopting social media won\u2019t instantly set your practice apart. Start thinking out of the box in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Most Misused Modifier<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/revenue-cycle-management\/modifier-59-25-91-guide-coders\/\">The 59 modifier<\/a> is considered the most misused modifier by coders, partly because it\u2019s used to indicate two more procedures performed on the same visit to different sites on a patient\u2019s body. Warning: it should <em>never<\/em> be used to prevent a service from being bundled or to bypass the insurance carrier\u2019s edit system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>User-Friendly Portals are a Must for Stage 2<\/strong><br \/>\nMeaningful Use Stage 2 requires that at least 5% of all unique patients access their health information online. Therefore, selecting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/electronic-health-records\/patient-portal-patients-access\/\">user-friendly patient portal<\/a> is essential to securing an MU incentive payment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnostic Errors Are Still a Problem<\/strong><br \/>\nAt least 85% of the 190 cases studied in a recent JAMA Internal Medicine study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/practice-management\/3-most-common-diagnostic-mistakes\/\">faced a moderate to severe risk of harm or injury to patients<\/a>.
