While 82% of physicians say they want patients to be active in their own care by using EHRs, only 31% believe they should have full access to their electronic health records.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t Forget the RECs<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">The ONC has funded <\/span>62 Regional Extension Centers (RECs) with the purpose of helping providers effectively adopt and use EHRs<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">. These RECs focus on individual and small practices, in addition to those lacking the resources needed to implement an EHR. In other words, take advantage.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Making ePrescriptions Work for You<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">ePrescriptions now make up almost 45% of all prescriptions filled, and that number is only expected to grow. Yet, <\/span>practices still need to take measures<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> like avoiding batching and queuing before transmission to ensure smooth workflows.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Physicians Can Battle Back Against Declining Reimbursements<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">According to the Practice Profitability Index, <\/span>65% of doctors see declining reimbursements<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> as the top issue negatively affecting the financial success of physician practices. While the budget sequester didn\u2019t make profitability any easier, doctors who increase their patient base, outsource medical billing and maximize their tax deductions stand a better chance at remaining profitable.<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outsourcing Billing: Getting By With a Little Help From Your Friends<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">According to MGMA, your practice isn\u2019t doing well if your\u00a0denial rate is over 4%. And because the average claim denial can cost $25 to $30 each, doing it yourself may not be your best bet. <\/span>Outsourcing, then, becomes an efficient alternative<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sebelius Takes an Unprecedented Step<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">On May 8, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius took a bold step by releasing a massive data filed detailing the prices more than 3,000 hospitals charge for the 100 most frequently used medical services under Medicare. <\/span>Smaller practices can use the data<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> to gain the upper hand against competing hospitals.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Does Correlation Equal Causation?<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">HHS and ONC are wary of the correlation between an increase in inappropriate billings to payers and the growing popularity of EHRs. In order, the four most popular on tap for doctors are: implementing a new EHR, replacing an existing EHR, outsourcing billing and replacing a practice management system.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cookbook Medicine Isn\u2019t a Hit<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">The term \u2018cookbook medicine\u2019 refers to practicing medicine by adhering to strict procedures and protocols. This highly standardized model of care is <\/span>facing heavy resistance<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> from physicians forced to use this model of care by hospital administrators.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Little SEO at the Office<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">A 2012 study by Google found that 77% of patients search for their physician online prior to booking an appointment, which means medical practice that haven\u2019t already begun <\/span>thinking of optimizing their online presences for SEO<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> should probably get to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shocker: Doctors Are Bogged Down by Tedium<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">According to the Practice Profitability Index (PPI), the burden created by activities like coding, documentation and other similar tasks are too often falling on the shoulders of physicians. More than half (59%) of physician respondents said they sacrificed more than 20% of their time this way. Too much time at a desk means less time in the exam room.<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Health IT Vendor Red Flags<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Be sure to <\/span>avoid certain vendor and software traits when shopping for a new health IT solution<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">: a. any mystery regarding cost, b. they\u2019re selling software they didn\u2019t build without admitting it, c. in-system dashboards lack customization, and d. the system lacks real-time business intelligence reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You Can\u2019t Keep from Being Judged<br \/>\n<\/strong>If you aren\u2019t worried about your reputation on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/practice-marketing\/4-ways-shine-physician-rating-websites\/\">physician rating websites<\/a>, you may be in for a surprise.
