And with telehealth&#8217;s reach expanding, the 143,000+ member strong American College of Physicians offers advice for doctors considering connecting with patients remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Their<strong> take on telemedicine in 2015<\/strong> includes challenges, cautions, and benefits for primary care doctors adopting telehealth. The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/annals.org\/article.aspx?articleid=2434625\">ACP position paper<\/a> <\/strong>is worth a read &#8212; even if you\u2019re still only thinking about expanding the reach of your medical group using this evolving technology.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>ACP recommendations include:<\/p>\n<p>* Ensure your liability insurance covers telemedicine<br \/>\n* Ideally interact with established patients<br \/>\n* Provide the same standard of care as you would in person<\/p>\n<p>These are nothing new, but the ACP also addresses these challenges:<\/p>\n<p>* Provider difficulties getting multiple licenses across state lines<br \/>\n* Big questions about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/medical-technology-trends\/telemedicine-get-paid\/#more-2349\">how insurers will pay for telehealth<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong>* Telemedicine still lacks a standard definition<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t just offer telemedicine\u00a0because it\u2019s cool. Or, as the ACP puts it: \u201cACP believes that physicians should use their professional judgment about whether the use of telemedicine is appropriate for a patient. Physicians should not compromise their ethical obligation to deliver clinically appropriate care for the sake of new technology adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greater patient convenience (no need to travel) and consulting with people who might otherwise not receive care (no nearby specialty neurologist) are more gains of \u201ce-visits,\u201d David A. Asch, MD, MBA says. At the same time, virtual visits can help reduce <strong>work-related infection risks<\/strong> by limiting unnecessary in-person exposure for both patients and healthcare staff. In an editorial <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/annals.org\/article.aspx?articleid=2434626\">\u2018The Hidden Economics of Telemedicine\u2019<\/a><\/strong>, Dr. Asch adds the technology could mean \u201cpotentially enormous\u201d savings for physicians, hospitals and other providers.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, most physicians adopt telemedicine services to close care gaps for their patients, according to a FierceHealthIT article on the HIMSS Analytics&#8217; 2014 Telemedicine Study. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercehealthit.com\/story\/himss-analytics-most-providers-adopt-telemedicine-close-patient-care-gaps\/2014-08-14\">Remote consultations and around-the-clock care<\/a> <\/strong>were top benefits according to the 406 people who responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelemedicine offers a great deal of promise in its ability to provide medical services to populations unable to obtain them,\u201d according to HIMSS, which recently addressed <strong>common telemedicine issues and possible solutions<\/strong>.
