Put in dollars, the Institute of Medicine estimates $765 billion (that\u2019s with a B) or 31% of the $2.5 trillion U.S. health spending can be attributed to \u201cexcessive costs.\u201d<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a major problem. Duplicate, inefficient and costly care may not surprise anyone who\u2019s been a patient and had the same tests repeated over and over by different providers.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s a solution?<\/p>\n<p>The technology could remove a lot of the inefficiency and waste in the system, industry experts said at the <strong>University of Miami LIFE 2015<\/strong> Panel on Innovation Technology.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Essentially, the need is great, and the time is right, to use technology to:<\/p>\n<p>* Decrease redundant care<\/p>\n<p>* Improve transitions of care<\/p>\n<p>* Advance provider-provider and provider-patient communication<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Waste Removal<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of talk about how payment reform and tort reform and care delivery reform can help extract a lot of that waste out of the system,\u201d said Albert Santalo, Founder and Chairman of CareCloud. \u201cI\u2019m a big believer that technological reform is the way that needs to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can connect healthcare in a better way than paper, phone and fax \u2013 which is much of the way it\u2019s connected today \u2013 you can share medical records, you can share administrative records, you can share information, and you can collaborate in a human way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a big way we see for waste to be taken out of the system,\u201d Mr. Santalo said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Clinical Information in Real-Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;You heard the comment from Albert about collecting information on paper? That\u2019s absolutely true,&#8221; said Brian Lawrence, Chief Technology Officer at Hill-Rom Holdings, Inc., maker of hospital \u2018smart beds.\u2019 One result is important patient information like vital signs do not get entered into the computer until hours later. &#8220;It\u2019s time-stamped, but until that data is in the computer system we can\u2019t do anything with it. We can\u2019t use it for diagnosis, we can\u2019t use it to make decisions, or to help the patient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe future will be different by how we manage the data around the patient, in real-time \u2026 to make clinical decisions,\u201d Mr. Lawrence said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Redundancy Is Also Costly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Repetitive care not only takes more time, but it\u2019s inefficient when patients see multiple providers using different data systems. \u201cThere is a lot of redundant data capture, very little data sharing, and when it\u2019s shared \u2014 it\u2019s very inefficient,\u201d Mr. Santalo said. \u201cAll those things contribute to cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors, partially because of the legal system in this country, don\u2019t want to make mistakes.
