Subject to a time crunch, many are scrambling to deploy an electronic records system right away.<\/p>\n<p>But if physicians and practice managers aren\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/definitive-emr-ehr-buying-guide\/\">careful in their selection processes<\/a>, they may purchase equipment only to see it quickly become outdated. Systems that are not able to change with the times will become tools of a bygone era.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Many doctors looking to purchase a records system are unaware of the significant differences between electronic medical records (EMRs) and electronic health records (EHRs). An EMR will make it extremely difficult to not only attest for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/getting-paid-for-meaningful-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meaningful Use<\/a> and EHR incentives but to improve the quality of care as well.<\/p>\n<p>Before you go digital at your practice, it\u2019s important that you understand the differences between EMRs and EHRs, why <strong>EHRs make it easier to attest for Meaningful Use<\/strong>, and how they can improve patient management and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next few weeks, Power Your Practice will be parsing out the particulars between EMRs and EHRs in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/tag\/end-of-emr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cEnd of EMR\u201d series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, PYP is taking readers through the evolution of medical records \u2013 piece by piece, system by the system \u2013 to elucidate how the EHR has become the optimal digital records model of the present and future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breaking Records<br \/>\n<\/strong>It all began with paper records, which can work for a single physician providing care, but make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/joining-an-hie-or-rhio-navigate-the-opt-inopt-out-decision-carefully\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharing health care information across providers<\/a> more difficult. Notes scribbled in the margin, blurry faxes, and inconsistent shorthand can lead to errors, delays, and a degraded level of care.<\/p>\n<p>EMRs were the next step, giving healthcare providers the ability to create a record that allowed for a third party to independently verify diagnoses and treatments.<\/p>\n<p>First introduced by Lawrence Weed, MD, in the 1960s, EMRs were a major step forward in medicine; however, any system developed over 50 years ago could not be prepared for the technology requirements of today.<\/p>\n<p>EHRs take the progress made over decades of EMR use and incorporate it into a system that gives providers greater accessibility, flexibility, and functionality.
