The FY2027 ICD-10-CM code set took effect on October 1, 2026. It applies to patient encounters and discharges from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. Claims with dates of service on or before September 30, 2026, still use the FY2026 codes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s update is modest. According to the FY2027 ICD-10-CM update, the code set includes 190 new codes, 30 deleted codes, and four revised code titles. Although these changes may appear limited, they can still create implementation challenges. Without reviewing updated coding requirements and providing targeted staff training, healthcare organizations may continue using outdated practices into the new fiscal year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are common risks that can take place during an annual code-set transition, not evidence that every organization will experience problems under FY2027. The most basic risk is using last year\u2019s code set for this year\u2019s claims. This includes printed manuals, saved code lists, EHR favorites, charge-code mappings, and internal cheat sheets built on FY2026 codes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When a code is deleted or expanded, an old reference can point coders to a code that is no longer valid or no longer specific. Payer edits may then reject the claim.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first step is to fix inventory.\u00a0List every location where a code is stored or recommended, then verify that each reflects the FY2027 Tabular List, Alphabetic Index, and applicable addenda published by <\/span>CMS<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>CDC\u2019s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
