It&#8217;s legacy? Facebook and ironic t-shirts. On that note, your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cigna.com\/about-goyou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Go You&#8217; campaign<\/a> doesn\u2019t feel hip to me.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Given that the Supreme Court gave the ACA\u2019s individual mandate its constitutional gusto, it\u2019s not particularly shocking to see <strong>insurers embrace a little more populism<\/strong>, targeting a wider range of clients with consumer-friendly pivoting schemes and in some cases, large-scale rebranding strategies.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the individual mandate represents an expanded market, so I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if insurance companies take to channels like Groupon to peddle digital goodies like Aetna\u2019s tool to compare out-of-pocket expenses.<\/p>\n<p>In vying for the public\u2019s attention, insurers feel the pressure to connect with people. Suddenly, brands like Cigna and Aetna are engrossed in social media and Humana is trying to live up to its name, with an approach CEO Michael B. McCallister loosely describes as \u201chonest, aware and bold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among them is a program that incentivizes healthy decision-making, where <strong>users redeem points accrued for electronics, clothing or travel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Agreed, these are bold moves for one of the most disliked industries in the United States. But they come off as a last-minute scramble to any healthcare skeptic, a sort of Hail Mary pass into a membranous legislative end zone full of so much uncertainty, it\u2019s like they\u2019ve taken a page out of some 20-year-old\u2019s early-stage tech startup\u2019s playbook.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, when you have the money to fund an image rehash, why not?<\/p>\n<p>Companies in other industries have been forced to adapt to social and legislative changes in the past \u2013 Pepsi spent $1 million on a <em>logo alone <\/em>to keep up with a more tech-savvy generation and BP dropped $211 million in 2008 to revamp its image in an effort to look more environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s tough to sweep images of corporate bureaucracy and coverage refusal under the rug, but it <em>was<\/em> Thomas Jefferson that believed \u201cmoney, not morality, is the principle commerce of civilized nations.\u201d Therefore, it\u2019s expected that WPP\u2019s Kantar Media reported a <strong>$122 million increase in medical and dental insurance advertising spending from 2010 to 2011.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This unceremonious shift to the positive side of public opinion heralds more rash efforts, as is the case with the insurance company division formerly known as Blue Cross &amp; Blue Shield of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The newly minted Florida Blue features a more homey script for their logo as part of a change that VP of brand development and marketing communications Mark Lee believes will \u201chelp us strengthen our position as we enter new markets and solidify ourselves as a health solutions company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth solutions\u201d is the key phrase here. With an estimated 3.1 million additional Floridians entering the individual health insurance market by 2014, companies like Florida Blue are <strong>disassociating themselves from the reviled \u201cinsurer\u201d label, <\/strong>and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercehealthpayer.com\/story\/florida-blue-launches-retail-insurance-stores\/2012-08-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experimenting with retail approaches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Belinda Lang, head of brand and consumer marketing at Aetna, echoed these sentiments when Aetna announced it was continuing its evolution &#8220;from insurance carrier to a health solutions company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe end consumer is who we need to focus on,\u201d said Lang.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, revamping one\u2019s image isn\u2019t wholly unreasonable. Old Spice magnificently rebranded itself, lifting its image from pass\u00e9 aftershave to bastion of masculinity and taste among management-level professionals. However, more expensive fragrances are trickier to remove from expensive sports coats.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking as someone who has been declined multiple times by medical insurance companies \u2013 and am now insured for the first time in my adult life \u2013 I want to see changes that go <strong>beyond bold typefaces and warmer colors on brochures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If auto and homeowners&#8217; insurances provide coverage against unforeseen disasters, I expect my health insurance plan to cover me against risk in the event of some unforeseeable circumstance, <strong>not try to manage my medical care.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Modern health insurance writes checks to providers based on services rendered. Reimbursement for losses is nowhere in sight because the amount it pays is based on how much we consume.<\/p>\n<p>There are 50.7 million uninsured Americans \u2013 that\u2019s more than the population of our northern neighbor. Crafting ads worthy of an Urban Outfitters tee isn\u2019t enough to make me a believer.
