Many of us have read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ocr\/privacy\/hipaa\/understanding\/index.html\">HIPAA compliance standards<\/a> but don\u2019t fully understand them. So let\u2019s break this down, together.<\/p>\n<p>There are three required elements, or safeguards, under HIPAA that are necessary for a compliant backup provider. Keep in mind these safeguards most hold up, even during a system crash.<\/p>\n<p>First are technical requirements, including a minimum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/how-to-choose-a-hipaa-compliant-data-backup-service\/\">128-bit encryption,\u00a0deletion and destruction of data<\/a>, which has to meet the Department of Defense\u2019s standards, set forth in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/library\/nispom.htm\">National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Second are the physical requirements, or issues related to physical infrastructures such as locks and secure access areas. The Physical Safeguards in the HIPAA Security Rule include standards for facility access controls, workstation use, and security and device and media controls.<\/p>\n<p>Third, a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/12-best-practices-to-keep-your-staff-hipaa-compliant\/\">administrative requirements<\/a> must be observed in order to meet HIPAA compliance. The standards cited in the Security Rule include a provider\u2019s security management process, assigned security responsibilities, workforce security, information access management, security awareness training, and contingency planning.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides a\u00a0Security Series, which provides a more\u00a0<strong>in-depth understanding of the three safeguards.<\/strong>\u00a0We suggest checking these out before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/solutions\/\">choosing a service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural Disaster Recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When talking about HIPAA compliance, it\u2019s also important to note your system\u2019s <a href=\"..\/blog\/3-reasons-paper-records-arent-safe\/\">backup service capabilities<\/a>. The key to backup and recovery is to\u00a0<strong>ensure data can be restored for six years beyond any last edits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a practicing physician, you should <strong>understand how backup services would benefit your practice in case of natural disasters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, during the devastating tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modernhealthcare.com\/article\/20130521\/NEWS\/305219954?AllowView=VW8xUmo5Q21TcWJOb1gzb0tNN3RLZ0h0MWg5SVgra3NZRzROR3l0WWRMWGJVZjhBRWxiNUtpQzMyWmV1NVgwWUpibWw=&amp;utm_source=link-20130521-NEWS-305219954&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=hits\">2 million patient records we\u2019re saved<\/a> because providers used off-site backup servers to store patient data. This is a much different scenario to Hurricane Katrina, where havoc in hospitals was compounded by the loss of countless paper-based medical records.<\/p>\n<p>The advantages to using a data backup service are numerous. For one, your data is stored off-site, which lets you breathe easy in case of blackouts and malware.
