{"id":938,"date":"2011-11-06T10:26:40","date_gmt":"2011-11-06T15:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.poweryourpractice.com\/?p=938"},"modified":"2011-11-06T10:26:40","modified_gmt":"2011-11-06T15:26:40","slug":"cms-to-cut-medicare-payments-by-27-4-percent-in-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carecloud.com\/continuum\/cms-to-cut-medicare-payments-by-27-4-percent-in-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"CMS to Cut Medicare Payments by 27 Percent in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than one million providers of healthcare services to Medicare beneficiaries must <strong>prepare for a significant pay cut<\/strong> due to the final rule released by the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS).<\/p>\n<p>Physicians and non-physician practitioners who receive reimbursements under the <strong>Medicare Physician Fee Schedule<\/strong> (MPFS) will have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/medicare-and-medicaid-want-money-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">payments slashed by 27.4 percent<\/a> starting in 2012, unless Congress intervenes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis payment rate cut would have dire consequences that should not be allowed to happen,\u201d said a statement from Donald M. Berwick, MD, CMS administrator. \u201cWe need a permanent SGR fix to solve this problem once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/medical-practice-costs-increase-budgets-decrease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Providers face steep cuts<\/a> under the current law based on the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula, but have avoided the SGR\u2019s reduction of payments through legislation every year except 2002.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cms.gov\/apps\/media\/press\/release.asp?Counter=4156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medicare physician fee schedule rule<\/a> serves as a reminder to Congress that there is a looming crisis in the Medicare program only they can stop, and the clock is ticking,\u201d according to a statement released by American Medical Association President Peter W. Carmel, MD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout swift action by Congress, on January 1 physicians who care for Medicare patients will be hit with a 27.4 percent cut caused by the broken Medicare physician payment formula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This extreme pay cut could not only <strong>jeopardize the quality of care for seniors<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; who may see providers opt out of the program &#8212; but the livelihood of physicians, therapists and nurse practitioners who provide these services to Medicare beneficiaries as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many physicians are already struggling with inadequate Medicare payment rates and the ongoing threat of future cuts from this broken physician payment formula,\u201d said Dr. Carmel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayments for Medicare physician services have fallen so far below increases in medical practice costs that there is a 20 percent gap between Medicare payment updates and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carecloud.com\/continuum\/are-private-medical-practices-facing-extinction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost of caring for seniors<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drastic drop in Medicare payments is the most controversial element of the final rule, but other changes were also outlined in the plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CMS Final Rule Changes<\/strong><br \/>\nPayments for Medicare beneficiaries&#8217; Annual Wellness Visits will be increased to reflect the additional staff requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Covered telehealth services like smoking cessation will be expanded.<\/p>\n<p>CMS&#8217;s &#8220;misvalued code initiative&#8221; will be expanded to help ensure accurate payments for physician services and enhanced management of the payment system.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;multiple procedure payment reduction policy&#8221; will be expanded to recognize overlapping activities in advanced imaging services.<\/p>\n<p>Aspects of physician incentive programs like Physician Quality Reporting System, the ePrescribing Incentive Program, and the Electronic Health Records Incentive Program will be updated or modified.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you feel these changes will affect your practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than one million providers of healthcare services to Medicare beneficiaries must prepare for a significant pay cut due to the final rule released by the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS).
