THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURE

CPT is used when the patient performs therapeutic exercises in the water. This treatment uses the therapeutic effects of water (such as buoyancy and resistance), to help ease the symptoms. The treatment may be reasonable and necessary for a loss or restriction of joint motion, strength, mobility, or function that has resulted from a specific condition.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF WATER:

  • Increase in muscle strength and endurance
  • Improve cardiovascular endurance
  • Decreased joint effusion
  • Improve ROM and flexibility
  • Relaxes mind

TYPES OF EXERCISES THAT ARE INCLUDED:

  • Strengthening exercises
  • Endurance Exercises
  • Back leg Lift
  • Side Leg lift
  • Runner’s stretch
  • Deep water walking with hand web
  • Arm exercises using water heights

Conditions in which aquatic therapy is beneficial:

  • Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Paralysis or paresis
  • Neurological conditions causing muscle weakness, spasticity like stroke and cerebral palsy
  • Orthopedic injuries and trauma
  • Pain
  • Post-operative joint rehabilitation for example after THA, TKA etc

» This code should be used when exercise is being performed in the water and hydrotherapy is used only for wound debridement
» Require the professional skills of qualified healthcare professionals that includes:

  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Chiropractors
  • Physical Therapist Assistant
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant

» Billed in 15 minutes increment
» Require therapy modifiers (GP, GN, GO, CO, CQ)
» CMS 8-minute rule and AMA rule of Eights are applied

REIMBURSEMENT GUIDELINES

For reimbursement following elements must be documented the Physical Therapy Notes:

  1. Physical Therapy diagnosis such as muscle weakness, impaired mobility etc. to justify medical necessity.
  2. Aquatic aerobics increase strength and endurance that helps to improve or maintain range of motion and flexibility .
  3. Total direct time spent by the provider with patient.
