The Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS) is Virginia’s statewide immunization registry that contains immunization data of persons of all ages. VIIS is a voluntary, free, web-based system for data that documents all immunizations a person has received into one definitive, accurate record. VIIS is an integral tool for ensuring that children and adults receive their age-appropriate immunizations while preventing under- and over-immunizing. Under-immunized children are vulnerable to preventable and serious illness. Over-immunizing occurs when healthcare providers are unaware of immunizations given by other providers and give duplicate vaccines to the person. A complete and accurate immunization record will eliminate the unnecessary duplication of immunizations that now occurs in 21% of children. Initially VIIS is populated by birth records for children born in Virginia. VDH works with numerous organizations in order to pre-populate the system with existing immunization history. In addition, VIIS is continuously being populated with immunization data from providers and organizations across the state.
