Health insurance exchanges go into effect in the United States on October 1st. These marketplaces, a major part of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA), aim to provide increased access to affordable private insurance to uninsured Americans.

Under the ACA, insurance companies will no longer have the ability to deny medical coverage to Americans with pre-existing conditions, which is arguably the legislation’s largest logistical challenge.

In providing private insurance to uninsured patient populations, the ACA’s exchanges ensure they have access to more complete care with certain guarantees of coverage. Their efficiency is paramount to the 30 million patients entering the US healthcare system as a result of healthcare reform.
